Many people wrongly assume that learning the guitar takes months and even years. The truth is that you can learn to play the guitar quicker than you thought. Sure it takes a lot of time to develop exquisite mastery and superior skill with this instrument, but you can learn the basic concepts in a matter of weeks and even days. Many people have already proven this theory. The guitar is actually a simple instrument to learn, but the possibilities for improvisation are endless.
Before trying to learn how to play guitar chords, it is important to know the basic concepts first. A typical guitar has six strings – three treble and three bass strings. Each of those strings represent a particular note designated with the letters E, A, D, G, B, and E, from top to bottom respectively. Those notes are called “open strings”, because you don’t need to press your fingers on the fret board to play those notes. The open strings are often used as the basis for tuning the guitar.
Beginner guitar lessons emphasize the importance of familiarization with basic notes and scales on the guitar. Once your knowledge of basic notes and scales become second nature, it is the perfect time for you to start discovering how to play guitar chords. There are lots of chord charts available in music stores, and all you need to do is invest in those. This is not unlike playing the piano – or some other musical instrument for that matter – you need to practice and become confident with the scales – confidence with the scales will convert to familiarity with the cords and confidence to take on other pieces of music. It is not that hard!
Try to play chords as they are illustrated in the charts, then familiarize yourself with those chords as thoroughly as possible. That gives you 4 basic types of chords, in 12 keys, and at least 4 to 5 variations for each chord. This may sound difficult at first, but if you utilize chord charts and practice often, you will play the guitar in no time. Before you know it, you will be able to learn guitar songs in no time.
