Singing and Using your Six string at the Time

Even when I first started teaching the guitar lessons, it was easy to see that some of the students had an immediate ability to sing and play songs at the same time. Other students had a horrible time trying to match their singing to their playing. Here are a few tips to help you sing and play at the same time.
Practice playing the guitar first. If you are struggling to change the chords, it will be impossible to match the singing and playing. Professional musicians have one tool in common, a metronome.
The next step is to work on the song. If you are not sure of the melody, get help. A teacher can be very helpful here. It's going to be easiest for you if you start with a song you know and one that is not too difficult to play. After you can master easier songs, then try songs with fuller chords and fancier guitar arrangements.
Next, try to put the singing and playing together at the same time. It helps to try the song at a slow tempo. In our Christian Guitar Course there is a slow practice session for each lesson that helps students learn each song. You may want to hum the song first, and then try the words.
One more suggestion has to do with your mental and spiritual expectations. Imagine that you can already sing and play the guitar with ease. I believe in a personal God and always suggest beginning with prayer.
Would you like to try praying? Just look around us, you can see there has to be a Creator that made this world. There is no way that the animal kingdom was randomly created by accident.
Everything in nature points to a Designer. Is it possible to actually get guidance through prayer? That is correct It may even be a means to help you with playing and singing with your guitar.

First Electric Guitar

Electric Guitar: The first Instrument
It was the radio industry in the 1920s that made possible electrical amplification and thus prepared the ground for the first amplified electric guitar. Loyd Loar is one of the main figures of the time. An engineer at Gibson Guitar Company, Loar developed an electric pick up for viola and string bass. In his design, the vibrations of the strings were carried through the bridge of the instrument. In turn, the magnet and coil (electric pick up) would register and pass those vibrations to the amplifier. The first actually electric guitar was commercially advertised by Stromberg-Voisinet company in 1928 which applied a similar pick up. The difference from Loar’s pick up was that the vibrations of the strings were carried through the soundbox and not from the bridge. In either case, the early innovators faced a problem. The signal was too weak. The first modern electric guitar called the “Frying Pan” was developed and marketed by George Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker in 1932. The difference was that the electromagnetic pick up now registered the vibrations from the strings themselves. The result was a much stronger tone, a bigger signal.
The “Frying Pan” hollow body electric Hawaian style guitar, was played flat on the lap. The sound it produced was very unique and different from the acoustic sound and was slow to be accepted by most musicians.
Unsatisfied with the feedback, tonal quality and lack of sustain, many artists at the time started experimenting and using a solid blog of wood. Les Paul, already an accomplished acoustic guitarist, used a solid piece of pine wood and added the electric picks ups. He nicknamed it “The Log”. Thus, the first solid body guitar was born!
Leo Fender mass produced a solid body guitar in 1950 and two years later Gibson mass produced its first solid body electric guitar endorsed by Les Paul.

It allows you to learn how to strum in time to the notes that are being played and helps you learn rhythm when it comes to strumming. On the other hand, some great guitar performers may not be entirely skilled in reading sheet music, but they know their guitar by heart. This familiarity and emotional closeness with their guitar helps them to create instant guitar solos, riffs, and sometimes even new songs. Creativity in playing the guitar only arises from constant exposure and mastery of the basics. The truth is, you cannot pick up your guitar to improvise if you don't have existing musical ideas in your head. There's only one way to expand your arsenal of musical ideas, and that is through music appreciation. Ask yourself: What sort of music have I been listening to? You need to learn to play guitar (or some other instrument)

The best investment I ever made in myself was learning to play the guitar. Because I did, I'm hardly ever bored, and I can have a lot of fun anywhere. As a younger man, it made me popular with the ladies. Now it makes me popular with the kids. It's funny how one regresses with age: Playing love songs is fun, but playing silly children's songs is a blast, especially for a grown man.
Recently, someone told me, "I envy you because you can make music." This puzzled me. Why? Being able to pick the guitar (badly) and "sing" (if you can call it that) is hardly uncommon. It's not an esoteric achievement attainable only by gurus and shaman. It's not as if I was born with a guitar in my hands (although my mom used to tell me that when I was a teenager making a ruckus, teasing about what a pain I was). If you want to play an instrument and make music, take the time and learn how to do it! It's given me more joy than anything else, and I love sharing that joy with others.
Anyway, I asked the person who "envied" me why they didn't learn to play the guitar or some other instrument. Their answer left me stunned: "I'm just not musically inclined."
Huh? You're not musically inclined? If you want to play music, doesn't that make you inclined? It's not like Jimi Hendrix just picked up a guitar one day and mastered it the next. The only difference between him and you is that he spent tens of thousands of hours with his guitar. It's not like you can't learn, you just have to do the work: learn a little theory and practice, practice, practice. The only difference between someone who is "musically inclined" and someone who is not is that the musician cares enough about it to spend many rigorous hours studying.
Playing music is all about having fun, but learning to play music is all about discipline. Your fingers will ache. You'll get blisters in places you never knew existed. It will hurt your very heart to keep trying to nail that same riff and keep hitting it sour. The payoff is that eventually your trained fingers will dance lightly on your instrument as if it were an extension of your heart, and your heart will soar when you finally do nail that riff. I'll never forget the first time I played a song all the way through. It was a little (basically) two-chord Beatles song, "Eleanor Rigby." I used to love switching up the lyrics to fit the situation. Still do, actually.
My advice to anyone who has ever looked at musicians on stage and felt a twinge of envy is to commit some time and effort and learn to play. After a couple months of regular practice, you'll be good enough to jam with your buddies. After a couple years, you'll be able to jam with the pros.
Learn to play the guitar today, or stop bellyaching about how easy musicians have it!

Different styles use different techniques and musical elements, but at the beginning you don't have to concern yourself with that. That will come later. To move on to these things, you first have to understand the basics. It's important to not get ahead of yourself.
When you're ready, you will have lots of choices: acoustic, classical, electric, blues, jazz, country, and so on. Each of those styles incorporates different techniques. From fingerpicking and strumming, to power riffs and muting techniques.
With acoustic guitar you will get familiar with strumming, chords, fingerpicking, and so on. Rock guitar will be more focused on power chords, power riffs, pedal effects, and plectrum technique. Classical will teach you arpeggios and classical fingerpicking. Blues is about blues notes, blues scales, and blues chord progressions. Jazz is improvising – jazz chord progressions, phrasing and ornaments. And country, of course, has its chicken picking techniques. We could go on and on with this, but we'll stop here. Guitar offers a lot of versatility.
As you can see, there are many different styles and the more you know, the better guitarist you will be. However, it's important to remember that it all starts with the basics. So before you move on to any particular style, take your time and master the basics.
